THE HILLS ARE ALIVE..........!!!!!!
Day 1 :
Arrive Dalhousie, either by air from Jammu, or by overnighttrain from Delhi which halts at Pathankot or by direct train from Bombay that halts at Chakki Bank, which is yhe closet rail head to Dalhousie. Check into Hotel Grandview & spend the rest of the day taking in the breathtaking view at the hotel, or an evening stroll into the Deodhar forest nearby. Sleep early after dinner as tomorrows unfolds yet another dream.
Day 2 :
Dawn in these beautiful mountains, with the sun peeping over the tops, is an invigorating sight but if you would like to take it easy, have breakfast in bed. You should ideally leavethe hotel by 09.00a.m or Chamba (24kms), scenic drive away which is one of the oldest princely states and dates back to the 6th century and is known for its splendid architecture. In & around Chambais Laxmi Narayan Temple, renowned for its finally executed classical forms, the 11th century Harirai Temple & the shriness of Champavati & Chamunda Devi. Rangmahal is the oldest palace which emits an aura of the Colonial days. Other sites of interest are century old St. Andrew Church, Bhurisingh Museum, Bharmour at 214m, with its 84 ancient temples or a Pilgrimage to Manimahesh lake at 4183m. Have lunch at Hotel Iravati or a Dhaba at Chamba's promenade "The Chowgan". If you would like to take in all the sights split it up between today & tomorrow or choose from preferences taking a bit in today & leave a bit for tomorrow. Dalhousie is also worth a visit from where you can go to Panchpula, where a streams feeds a series of pools.
Day 3 :
Part of the above which you didn't see yesterday.
Day 4 :
It is recommended to leave early with chirping of the birds for Dharamshala (160kms away) i.e. Seat of the Dalai Lama & arrive for lunch. Check into the Hotel Taragarh Palace at Palampur at the foothills of the Dauladhar Range. In the afternoon visit the war memorial & Kumal Pathri. Return to hotel for dinner.
Day 5 :
After breakfast leave for local sight seeing, visiting the colourful Tibetian township of Dharamshala and the small little shops selling Tibetan Crafts. Have lunch at a local Tibetan restaurant in town. Evening free at leisure to discover yourself as you gaze at the magnificent view of the snow capped peaks over sunset, from the gardens of the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 6 :
Leave early for Manali (254 kms) and a mountain drive of 7hrs. At 2050m Manali is surrounded by silent snow and deep boulder strewn gorges. There are fields of wild flowers, small picturesque hamlets & fruit laden orchards. Check into Manali Resort a luxury hotel on the banks of the river Beas. Having had a long drive laze in the gardens of the hotel overlooking the river & the picture postcard scenary beyond. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 7 :
Head to Rohtang Pass after breakfast passing Keylong, Kothi, Rohala Falls at 2500m. & finally the Rohtang at 3980m, the crucial link on the old trans Himalayan trade route. The snow here may be muddy, as it is a stale snow but its an experience walking on it, to you Bombayites. It is a 2 hrs drive to get here. Lunch here at a dhaba. It will probably be the only time you will ever have a meal on land at 12000 feet above sea level. Return & overnight at hotel a game of billiards & hot dinner.
Day 8 :
Today you visit Manikaran at 1737m. an 85kms drive which will take you 4 hrs. There are hot sulphur Springs here that bubble next to the icy waters of the Parvati river. On the way there or back, visit Kullu, an intericate web of numerous valleys, a visual delight & each more beautiful than the other.
Day 9 :
Today is the day for local sightseeing of the Hadimba temple built in 1553, with its 4 tiered pagoda roof, Vashishth hot springs & the Solang valley, a good picnic spot, where you may try your hand at Paragliding after a short pony ride. In the afternoon visit Naggar for its century old stone & wood castle & the art gallery of Russian paintings. Back to the hotel for a sumptuous dinner & to bed early.
Day 10 :
Leave early for Kufri or Shimla. This journey of 295 kms will take about 8 hrs passing through some very scenic mountains ranges. Have lunch at a wayside dhaba in the mountains with the distant snowcapped peaks looking down at you & think of all the unfortunate people back home, missing all this wonderful adventure. Reach Hotel Kufri Pacific just 45 minutes drive from Shimla or Hotel Asia the Dawn 2 km before Shimla town.
Day 11 :
Aries early & view sun rise streaming over apple orchards & snow capped peaks around you. Don't miss the eagle as it soars hundreds of feet above you screaming its welcome to you. After breakfast, take a trip to the little village of Chail, surrounded by magnificient Deodhar forests, at 2226m., 45kms away from Kufri. Visit the Chail palace, which is a gracious mansion. There are entrance tickets here that will cover you for tea and snacks A walk on the worlds highest cricket pitch & polo ground, will surely make the neighbours back home, green with envy. Have lunch at Chail palace in maharaja luxury. Return by evening & overnight at the hotel.
Day 12 :
After breakfast leave for local sightseeing, visiting Shimla town also, experiencing what life is for the locals and the boarding school children in this wonderful and quaint town. You can also visit the scenic, Narkhanda, Fagu, Naldhera, Mashobra, pray at the historical centuries old Hanuman temple and the Nagdevi temple and the famous Jakhu temple. Evening free at leisure to sit in the open air cool breezy environs of the hotel and drink in the scenery. Turn in early after you pack your bags because tomorrow heralds your last destination.
Day 13 :
Leave early for Parwanoo (approx 2hrs from Shimla). You will be now down to just 470m. & you can shed your warm clothes here. Check into your hotel Timber Trail Heights and take a refreshing dip in their swimming pool set in the hills. Be sure to reach there by 4 p.m. as the cable car stops at that time for the day in cse you are staying at Timber Trail Heights approachable only by cable car. In the evening take a trip to Pinjore Gardens, 10 kms away. On the way you can pack up some delicious vegetarian and non vegetarian pickles, to remind you of your holiday in the mountains Back to the hotel for a sumtuous dinner and watch the glittering lights of Chandigarh in the distance..
Day 14 :
After breakfast leave for sightseeing to Renukaji which is the largest lake in Himachal. Fed by underground springs, it is shaped like the profile of a reclining woman & is regarded to be the embodiment of goddess Renuka. One can even go to Kausali which is a charming hill sattion with lots of 'old world' charm. Return to the hotel for your last dinner in the hills.
Day 15 :
After breakfast leave for Bombay, via Delhi by road will take you 7 hours or to Ambala by road will take you 3 hours, to catch your train to Bombay..
